File problem guide

How to make an image file smaller

If a photo is too large for email, a form or a website, reducing dimensions is often the cleanest first step.

Quick answer

Resize first, then adjust quality only if you still need a smaller file.

Large phone photos often contain far more pixels than an upload form needs. Scaling the dimensions down can reduce file size without making the image look obviously degraded at normal viewing size.

Reduce image file size

  1. Choose the image.JPG, PNG, WebP and supported phone-photo formats can be used.
  2. Set a smaller maximum width. For many web uploads, reducing a very large phone photo is enough to cut the file size dramatically.
  3. Choose an output format and quality.JPG and WebP quality controls can reduce file size further. PNG is lossless and may stay larger.
Best for photos

JPG or WebP usually produces smaller photographic files than PNG.

Keep the original

Compression and resizing can discard detail. Keep your source image if you may need full resolution later.
