How to remove location data from a photo

Photos can contain EXIF metadata such as camera details, dates and sometimes GPS coordinates. Inspect it before sharing if privacy matters.

Quick answer

Inspect the photo metadata, then create a clean copy.

The metadata utility can show readable EXIF/GPS fields and create a new JPEG copy by redrawing the visible image pixels rather than carrying the original metadata block forward.

Check and clean photo metadata

  1. Choose the photo.Select the image you plan to share.
  2. View metadata.Look for GPS coordinates, camera information and other fields you do not want to share.
  3. Create a clean copy.Download the newly encoded JPEG and keep the original separately if you still need its metadata.
Visible content is unchanged

Cleaning metadata does not blur faces, remove text from the image or hide information that is visibly present in the pixels.

Keep the source

Metadata can be useful for photo organization, so keep the original when you may need that information later.
